What Is Furikake? A Simple Guide to Japan's Everyday Seasoning

While its roots are in Japan, furikake's versatility makes it a natural addition to the everyday kitchen.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Furikake originated in Japan in the early 20th century, initially developed as a way to add nutrients to everyday meals. Over time, it became a familiar pantry staple, with countless regional and household variations.

Traditional blends often combine sesame seeds, dried seaweed, salt and ingredients such as dried fish or egg. Each brings its own balance of savory flavor, aroma and texture.

THE SEISOMI APPROACH

At Seisomi, we draw inspiration from this tradition, choosing thoughtfully sourced ingredients to create blends suited to the way we eat today.

Both begin with roasted white and black sesame, Celtic sea salt and organic wild Atlantic nori.

Our Essential Furikake develops its rich, balanced umami from house-made sake kasu powder, crafted from the fermented rice lees of sake brewing. The result is a deeply savory blend with a gentle complexity.

Our Slightly Spicy Furikake combines toasted sesame with mild gochugaru, organic garlic and smoked paprika for a subtle warmth that complements rather than overwhelms.

Equally important is what we leave out. No cane sugar, added MSG, corn syrup, preservatives or unnecessary fillers. Just carefully chosen ingredients, each with a purpose.

BEYOND THE RICE BOWL

Rice may be furikake's traditional companion, but there's much more to explore.

Sprinkle it over eggs, avocado toast, roasted vegetables or grain bowls. Use it to finish grilled fish, chicken or tofu, or add a savory note to popcorn, noodles and tinned fish.

A little goes a long way. Add it just before serving to bring out the aroma of toasted sesame and the savory character of nori.

Clean ingredients. Deeper flavor. Everyday meals elevated.
